BlueMAC MRF Installed for Murray Browns

Murray Browns is an independent, family-owned company headquartered in Flixton, near Scarborough, owned and managed by Melvyn and James Brown. Serving the North Yorkshire region, the company has been established for over 41 years providing a range of services, in addition to recycling and waste management, which includes skip hire, quarried and recycled aggregates, agricultural lime and the supply and spreading of fertiliser.

 Long-standing Blue Machinery Central customers who continue to be impressed by what Blue and its sister companies have to offer, Melvyn and James asked the engineers at BlueMAC to come up with a solution to their need for a future-proof MRF system. The ever increasing volumes of commercial and C&D waste materials that are being recycled by Murray Browns at their Flixton waste treatment centre necessitated the design, manufacture and installation of a bespoke materials recycling facility (MRF) to replace their old small recycling plant which, although giving sterling service for many years, was now in need of replacement. Blue Machinery Central teamed up with sister company BlueMAC to provide the answer. Melvyn and James report that the plant is performing very well indeed and James Brown commented “We’d been to see some of the first BlueMAC MRFs operating in London and were extremely impressed by the design, build quality and performance.” He continued “What we saw and heard from the owners of the plants convinced us that a BlueMAC system was the best option and, of course, our long relationship with Blue Machinery Central made the choice that much easier. We are also aware of Blue’s industry leading after-sales service and spares back-up and this too was another positive influence on our decision making process.”

The BlueMAC MRF at the Murray Browns premises has been designed and tailor-made not only to produce the required specific clean saleable recyclables but also to fit neatly in the 7 acre site and allow materials handling to be carried out safely and efficiently around the new plant. Material flow is continuous throughout the working day, with the incoming C&D and commercial waste being conveyed and processed through a series of compatible, linked machines, including two bespoke picking stations and a fines clean-up line.

A generously sized feed hopper receives the incoming waste with an incline conveyor feeding the prime screening trommel, which separates to 50mm. The resulting fines are collected beneath the trommel drum and then conveyed to an IFE Flip Flow screener, which is preceded by an overband magnet to extract ferrous metals. The Flip Flow screener produces smaller fines to 10mm with any oversize material passing on to a General Kinematics de-stoner which separates the heavies from the lights, the latter being blown by an air knife and collected in a lights cage. The residual heavy material is collected from this process and conveyed to a single bay picking station for manual separation and selection, which removes required materials via a chute to a concrete storage bay below. Oversize material from the trommel (>50mm) is conveyed to second picking station, this time featuring six bays, where recyclable materials such as wood, plastics, cardboard, paper etc. are sorted, manually removed and dropped by chute to storage bays beneath the station. The picked material is then conveyed via an overband magnet for ferrous removal to a blower which separates the lights from the heavies with the residual material being stockpiled in a bay at the end of the plant. Murray Browns is processing in the region of 18 tonnes an hour of C&D waste through their new BlueMAC MRF and the plant has been designed with capacity to spare as the volumes are destined to increase in the coming years. Murray Browns estimates that in excess of 90% is being recycled and aims to improve even further on this already impressive figure.
