Flexible Screw Conveyors for Controlled Powder Processing

A flexible conveying solution was required to support powder transfer across multiple sites, including overseas installations, while increasing on-site storage capacity and maintaining controlled material flow for a UK-based cleantech company. For this specific project, focused on fertiliser and mineral powder handling applications, where material can be cohesive, issues including bridging, inconsistent discharge, and material build-up can arise if not properly managed.
Designing for Controlled Material Flow
To address the application requirements, Trantec Solids Handling developed a flexible screw conveyor system incorporating a large stainless steel hopper designed to support continuous operation.
Material loading was facilitated by a bolted lid and clamp-release hatch, with a mesh inlet grid that enhanced safety and helped break down agglomerates before entry. Smooth internal surfaces promoted discharge by minimising build-up and supporting cleaning, while an agitator positioned at the conveyor inlet ensured consistent feed into the screw, reducing the risk of bridging and rat-holing.
Conveying was achieved via a flexible conveyor assembly fitted with a stainless steel spiral, with stainless steel inlet and outlet sections selected for durability and process compatibility. This configuration provided flexibility, wear resistance, and gentle handling suited to fine powders.
System performance was managed using an integrated level probe interfaced with the control system, while a variable speed drive enabled throughput adjustment and responsive control. For maintenance and safe operation, access to the conveyor inlet was provided via a quick-release bomb door with toolless handwheels and a safety interlock.
Operational Performance Across Multiple Installations
Multiple systems were supplied for installation across domestic and international sites, demonstrating the design’s adaptability to different layouts and operational requirements.
In operation, the systems delivered stable, consistent material flow under varying conditions, supporting reliable conveying performance and reducing the risk of blockage or inconsistent feed.
The client reported that the completed installation met operational requirements, supported by responsive project management, efficient delivery, and design flexibility.
Reliable conveying performance often depends as much on inlet conditioning and discharge design as on conveyor specification.
This application demonstrates how aligning material characteristics with appropriate equipment design delivers reliable, controlled powder handling. By focusing on consistent feed, material selection, and integrated design, flexible screw conveyors can provide dependable performance across varied operating conditions.
